This is a song I wrote recently. • I was born in 1953. My father Clifford was an officer on a warship in Burma in WWII. The trauma he experienced there stayed with him until his death in 1963. This trauma caused him to frequently wake up screaming in the night when I was a young child, and it's this trauma that I believe drove him to the drink that eventually killed him. My wife Anne is of a similar age. Anne's father was a teenager when the German army invaded the Netherlands in May of 1940. Peter was made to join thousands of other forced labour workers who reluctantly provided support to the German war effort. Peter, like my father Clifford, was significantly traumatised by his experiences. The moustached dictator that caused WWII was directly and indirectly responsible for more than 50 million deaths. • This song honours our fathers and others who have paid a heavy price to defeat the scourge of fascism. • Here's the lyrics: • • Poppy Song • down unknown roads we walked on moonlight • shadows of the trees • 'Wat Zullen We Drinken'*, we sang • as they marched us to the East • innocently singing like the night birds in the spring • while over our heads, death's dark angel • faintly smiled and spread her wings • children forgive me please • the vacant spaces in between • the words • memories of things I've done and things I've seen • ah ah • plucked from prairie pastures like a dreamer from his sleep • to a million murder hornets stinging • on a nightmare Norman beach • children's games of make-believe • broken shells like maple leaves • on the Devil's Garden sand • again we do not understand • the tide has turned, again • down through the days of all your life • dark shadows cast • your mind takes flight, to a place • long ago, on the road to Mandalay • innocence just blown away, but not the stain left behind that day • to remember the rain, the soft wind in the trees • father, forgive me please, • I know not what you did for me • with every thing my eyes perceive I'll • try to realize, that I'm alive • alive, oh • white flowers, red flowers • blue forget-me-nots • the land of the free, dumb • like rocks on • The Land That Time Forgot • • 'Wat Zullen We Drinken' is a traditional Dutch song that was popular some years ago. • • #remembranceday #lestweforget #remembrance #poppy #poppies #wwii #ww2 #remembrancesunday #wewillrememberthem #veterans #remember #poppyappeal #armisticeday #poppyday #worldwar #canada #love #november #neverforget #veteransday #junobeach #britishnavy #ww2netherlands #ww2holland #wwiinetherlands #wwiiholland #poppiesremembranceday #ww2canada #wwiicanada • #ww2burma #wwiiburma
