The Palmered CDC Elk Caddis is a slight variation on the original CDC Elk. Tying the pattern this way creates a two-tone body with a bit more bulk than the original pattern, and it also allows for tying the pattern with larger and lower-quality CDC feathers. • Here's a tying note a decade and a half after we posted the pattern: instead of simply wrapping the CDC feather, nowadays we tend to spin the CDC fibers either in a dubbing loop or using the split thread technique. This creates a much more durable pattern since there's now no danger of the CDC feather stem cracking and breaking. This technique was not in wide use at the time we shot the original video. • Contact Walter Wiese about fly fishing trips or for tips on tying these patterns at [email protected] or at https://flyfishmontana.biz. He is no longer involved with Parks' Fly Shop in any way and instead operates as Yellowstone Country Fly Fishing.
