Math says the shortest distance between to points is a straight line. Yet science tells us that we walk with what's called a parallel leg swing, which means both of our legs are described to move in a back and forth motion with equal distance between them. • Which is why many trainers start each exercise description with, Start with your feet shoulder width apart... • In the gym, you'll also see what I call a railroad wear pattern on the belt of a treadmill. You'll get the joke when you look at the wear pattern on its running surface. What you'll see is the natural wear pattern in how we move. The smoothness of the belt reminds me of railroad tracks. • In contrast, the most efficient athletes in the world walk with what's called an inline footfall pattern. This technique demonstrates how optimum stride length for each step is achieved. • If you're here because of Stew Smith's story and the masking tape exercise he describes, then this is what it looks like in functional use. • http://www.military.com/military-fitn... • The video is a frontal view of what inline walking looks like. If you're trying it for yourself on the treadmill with at least a 2% incline that if you notice a much greater utilization of the adductor muscles, then you're doing it right. • You should also notice how much less arm swing you require to move this way. Most runners wont get the difference, but every soldier on a rucking march will truly appreciate how this makes carrying any added weigh much easier to accomplish.
