For several years now, teachers from elementary school all the way through college have been using an exercise called the privilege walk to bring social justice into the classroom. • In this video, I will explore the ways this exercise hurts kids, increases divisions and an us vs. them mentality, and encourages toxic levels of shame in already vulnerable kids. • We can and should do better! • With much thanks to Meg Bolger, Educator and Facilitator, who wrote the piece I used for both inspiration and validation. • / why-i-dont-won-t-facilitate-privilege-walk... • Please check out her article and website, in particular the exercise she uses instead: Privilege for Sale • This video doesn't make the case there is or isn't white privilege specifically, but does accept as a starting premise that different people worry about and/or take different things for granted in their lives, and these may be worth exploring. There's no downside to fostering self-awareness, personal responsibility, mutual respect and accountability, the challenge is to do that in age and developmentally-appropriate ways that do not put students at-risk of emotional or social harm.
