SINUS SUMP

sinus sump is an area within the sinuses where fluids or secretions don’t drain effectively, leading to potential problems. These sump areas can form in either the maxillary or sphenoid sinuses. • In the maxillary sinus, sump effects are often seen in patients with highly pneumatized—or expanded—sinuses. When the sinus extends down near the nasal floor, secretions tend to pool in these areas. This pooling creates a perfect environment for microbes to thrive, setting off a cycle of mucosal inflammation. Unfortunately, treating these areas can be challenging, as retained secretions make it difficult for washes and medications to reach the sump effectively. • For cases where maxillary sinus pneumatization extends below the floor of the nose, treatment requires a procedure called medial maxillectomy. However, when this extension is severe, treatment can become particularly complex and demanding. • Sphenoid sinus sumps present similar issues but are more common in patients with well-pneumatized sphenoid sinuses. Here, sump formation often results from incomplete surgery where the floor of the sinus isn’t fully visible, leading to retained secretions and localized inflammation. • To address a sphenoid sinus sump, surgeons often use a technique called the sphenoid sinus Lothrop procedure. This procedure aims to lower the front face of the sphenoid sinus to allow better visualization and access to the sump area, ultimately enabling more effective drainage. • In both types of sump effects, the key to successful treatment is improving drainage and preventing the build-up of secretions that can lead to chronic inflammation and infection. • #nose #throathealth #ear
