This is a trip I will never ever forget! After watching many videos of the Folkston Funnel in Folkston, GA, I have always wanted to visit there and see for myself how awesome this place is. I read beforehand that most of all trains traveling between Georgia and Florida must pass through here, which made Folkston a mecca for trains. The funnel consists two busy CSX Subdivisions: The Jesup (trains coming from and going to Chicago and the mid-west) and the Nahunta (trains coming from the going to the northeast, including all Amtraks). • I arrived a few minutes before 8 AM, shortly after CSX's Christmas curtailment (7 AM 12/24 to 7 AM 12/26) ends. Train action began with mixed freight Q453 heading south with C40-8W's, which I observed to be the most used engine here (compared to ES40/ES44's in my neck of the woods). Intermodal Q103 shortly follows with the Diversity unit #5000 trailing. Next the southbound Amtrak Silver Meteor went by. After many other freights passed by, I noticed a trend. During the day freight action on the Jesup Subdivision was more active than that of the Nahunta. The latter sees the majority of its freight action overnight. There were a couple of trains with foreign power during the first part of the day: Q607 with solid NS, and Q154 led by a Union Pacific. Train action was well spread out. • After lunch, train action started to become busier. The mixed freights and autoracks coming from and diverging to Jesup Subdivision dominated all after noon. I filmed the majority of the trains on the railfan platform and a few on the other side where the old depot is. The train to begin with was Jersey-bound intermodal Q032 heading straight on the Nahunta. I then went to the depot side for ethanol train K479 and coal train T080. More foreign power showed up beginning with coal train T097 with two Union Pacific's, one of which was a patched ex-Southern Pacific (still in the Southern Pacific livery but with UP locomotive number). Also, mixed freight Q605 had four UP's and autorack L212 had two. Two northbound Amtraks also made its way past, including the Silver Meteor and the Auto Train. • In my opinion, this visit to Folkston started off pretty good! • Also sorry about a few blurry spots when I tried to record a couple of signal indications of CP-Folkston. • Note: I'm really really NOT GOOD w/ train symbols. I try to get as many as I can through my scanner or asking other railfans around me (if any).**
