Eric and I decided to head to the Gunflint side of the Boundary Waters to chase lake trout while ice fishing and winter camping our way from Clearwater to West Pike and all the way up to Mountain Lake. We would spend 6 days in the woods with the goal of catching as many lake trout as possible from the comfort of our Snowtrekker hot tent with a wood stove. • The entire trip we focused on fishing with live sucker minnows under tip ups in 25-65' of water and fished a hole nearby with either a jigging spoon, jigging rapala, lipless crankbait and airplane jigs. The majority of our fish came on a clam leech flutter spoon tipped with a hunk of sucker meat or a live sucker on a plain hook under a tip up. • We camped on West Pike for three nights and Clearwater for two. We managed to catch a few lake trout on all three lakes, with the best fishing coming from West Pike. We experienced wonderful campsites at both lakes, and moderate to difficult trekking to travel between the three. • As we were closing out the 2020/21 ice fishing season, we were constantly contending with low snow cover that made it tough to travel and variable ice conditions as the thaw had already begun. Fortunately, we did get 3-4 inches of fresh powder on our hike out, which blanketed the gorgeous landscape in fresh white snow. Most of the ice was 15-20 and would still have been safe to fish on for a few weeks to come. • We ended up walking at least 20 miles on this trip, visiting three new lakes, exploring two new campsites and catching somewhere close to 25 fish. We learned a lot about catching early spring/late winter Lake Trout and are excited to get back to the area during the open water season. • #laketrout #wintercamping #icefishingbwca
