Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Hell Revealed 2, a 2003 megawad that carries on Yonatan Donner and Haggay Niv’s legacy of indiscriminate punishment. The majority of its maps were authored by team leader Jonas Feragen, with the final version being released by Andy Olivera, best known as the former webmaster of the Doom Speed Demo Archive. The megawad also features a full custom soundtrack courtesy of Sam “Metabolist” Woodman and Petter “Thyrbse” Martensen. When it comes to cranking up the difficulty, Hell Revealed 2 lives up to the family name, but its identity is much more fractured, and the mapping quality arguably less consistent than the original. I have to admit, this was near the top of my list of Most Dreaded Dean of Doom Episodes. For some reason, Hell Revealed 2 is the third wad I ever downloaded, after Eviternity and Sigil, and playing it so early in my Doom career was a big mistake. Luckily I’ve gotten a lot better at the game since then, so I won’t spend the WHOLE half hour complaining, but it is my civic duty to recommend against new players giving this megawad a spin, at least on Ultra-Violence. • Special thanks to DCG Retrowave for providing the MIDIs once again!
