First time deep sea fishing • For the past few years I have been really wanting to go deep sea fishing but never managed to get the funds or a group together to do it. Well, it finally came together. I was able to plan an awesome deep sea fishing trip to the Florida Keys. • We found out that this guy named Jeff runs a mate service where he will bring all the bait and all the rods and reels and you just provide the boat. The only problem is, the boat we planned on using from the military base was under strict weather restrictions. Luckily, Jeff had some connections and he ended up hooking us up with everything. We met up with Jeff in Marathon, Florida about 8:30 a.m. and headed out for a great day of deep sea sport fishing in the keys. • Sea sickness set in quick • It was a beautiful day and the sun was out. The Atlantic was a bit choppy that day but not too bad. I found myself getting seasick almost immediately despite the fact that I had taken dramamine. In hindsight I probably should have started my dosing a few days before. • Our first stop was the thunderbolt shipwreck (GPS Coordinates 24 39.663N 80 57.784W) at 120 feet deep and only 5 miles off the coast of Marathon. We snagged one King there but nothing else was biting. So we ventured to another spot. Hooked a few juvenile Barracuda and then started trolling for some big boys. We were hoping to catch some Mahi or Blackfin Tuna but they just weren’t biting that day. Wrong place wrong time. We managed to hook at Bonito an used him to chum for a while. It was a blast and many of the guys were really having a good time. I believe it was the first time deep sea fishing for about half the group. • Relaxing and catching up • The great thing about deep sea fish trips is that there isn’t much else to do but… fish. It was great to reconnect with my old buddies and spend some quality time relaxing. We were just happy to be enjoying some time out on the water telling stories and catching up. In the end we caught 3 King Mackerel, 2 Barracuda, and 1 Bonito. Not bad! • A great catch and cook • We ventured back to camp in Key West and started making dinner. On the menu that night, fresh fish tacos and seafood paella. We deep fried the freshly caught King Mackerel and Barracuda and enjoyed the bounty. It was a great catch and cook. There is something instinctual about catching and cooking your own food. It’s primal and very gratifying. I can’t wait for the next fishing trip and look forward to hooking a mahi or blackfin. • HASH TAGS: • #floridakeysfishing #marathonflorida #floridafishing #sportfishing • #marathonfishing
