Noting the structural problems inherent in the South African economy and high levels of graduate unemployment, SACSIS' Fazila Farouk interviews the Vice Chancellor of WITS University, Prof. Adam Habib about higher education's contribution to South Africa's racial and economic transformation. • Habib argues that higher education can fundamentally equalize the playing field if it is not simply the preserve of the rich. However, he contends that the problem of graduate employability is not simply a fault of the universities. It has also got to do with the absorptive capacity the economy itself, he argues, as he elaborates on the skills gap in South Africa and proposes measures to address it. • For a transcript of this interview please visit the SACSIS website at http://sacsis.co.za/site/article/1762.
