I've seen this texturing technique done before, but this was the first time I ever attempted to do one myself, and it turned out really good. Me and my wife really like it. Here are the steps. If ever your not happy with the results, this stuff can be scrape off easily with some water, leaving almost no residue after a wiping. • • Tools Needed : • • Measuring Tape • Pencil • String • Scissors • Tack • Tape - Electrical and Painters • Taping Knife • Adhesive Spreading Knife (9 inches, like the one on the right) • Mud Pan • Poly Or Paper To Hang On Walls • Spray-Lite Span Tex Texture ( Dries the whitess ) • • The Procedure: • • To start with you need to move mostly everything out of the room. Mud likes to drop everywhere and creates a mess, lay drop cloth if you got one around. • • I wanted to have rounded corners, with a little round area with no texture at all like shown in the picture. So start by marking out the round circles on your ceiling. I used a string attach to a pencil with a tack in the corner to mark the circles, it work like a charm. Mark out all of the bigger circles, then move onto marking all of the smaller inner circles with are not going to be mudded. • • Use a measuring tape, and measure out from the wall on the outer circle the distance you want your boarder to be, I made mine 7 inches wide. Go around and mark 7 inches out on every side of every outer circle. • • When all your marks are made, you can then start to put up some tape. This step requires a friend ( or girlfriend ) to be there to hold the other side, stretch the tape out between the 2 mark points on the outer circle. Pull fairly hard and EVEN on the tape to acquire a straight line. Tape up all the necessary lines. Use electrical tape to first tape the roundness of the circles, and then use strips of the painters tape to widen the protected area. Also tape fully tape off the inner circle to protect from mud. • • The walls must now be protected from falling mud, I used a 10 inch strip of paper to protect the walls, but poly also works even better then what I used. Use the painters tape to hang in tight against the top corner. If you don't have a tool like I did, I recommend hanging the tape first around the whole room, and then peeling it back a little and stuffing the poly or paper underneath it. • • Mix up some span lite, you want it to be a little runny, but not to much or your going to get it in the face .... not so good. I used the adhesive knife to spread the mud onto the ceiling, but many methods are possible, including : hawk and trowel, paint roller or a taping knife. • • Spread the mixture covering the area that is going to get the boarder, you don't spots with no mud, the entire area must be covered with even mud. Once the mud has been spread, use the adhesive knife to create the sea shell effect. Notice the direction I'm moving along when doing the boarder, very important to have a professional looking job. Corners are a little trickier, and I would start with a corner, to get the hang and fell of it. • • Let everything dry over night, I would not pull the tape and poly down from the roof until it has dried, in case that you hit the fresh mud with, who knows what, by accident. And your wall and ceiling sea shell boarder is now complete.
