When you become rated 100 percent permanent in total, then your family members, your spouse and your children (if they're college age and in college or 18 and younger) are eligible for CHAMPVA, which is the VA's version of health coverage. So they can have health coverage because you are 100 percent permanent and total rated veteran. • As part of that, when they get their CHAMPVA medical card, they can submit to have medical expenses reimbursed back to the time your effective date of being 100 percent permanent in total. • Our decision letters come, but the effective date is going to be six, nine, however many months earlier, right? • So let's say your decision letter comes in July, but your actual application, and therefore your effective date was January. So your decision letter comes in July. You're a hundred percent permanent in total. Now your family can get CHAMPVA. • So your family applies for CHAMPVA, that process is going to take, let's say two months, right? So now we're September. Your family gets CHAMPVA. • Your family can submit receipts for reimbursement for medical expenses all the way back to January when you were first a hundred percent permanent in total because that's the date of eligibility for ChampVA.
