Hard releasing a flyingfox following care this is Renzo

Renzo is an adult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox (and a very handsome one at that, with a light face and orange creamy ruff) who found himself stuck on a balcony under a huge fruiting native fig tree. • Renzo was unable to get off the glass balcony. A passing MOP noticed him trying to climb the glass to escape, took a video, then called in for rescue. • He spent time with a carer who has other male bats in rehab so they could all be stinky boys together; it's mating season now and the boys are all peeing on themselves to enhance their personal aromatic flavouring so they can be suitably stinky and attractive for the girls. • After a week in care, he was fit for release so I got to do my most favourite things - hard releasing batties and watching them fly off. • Renzo was very excited to leave; he was pretty rude about my ancestry, giving me a good tongue lashing before flinging himself out of the cage and doing an awesome belly flop (serves him right). I gave him a second chance, and he flew off, not brilliantly, but with some strength, probably muttering dire imprecations about the ugly furless giant who kidnapped him, imprisoned him, then stupidly taunted him with views of freedom from which he very cleverly escaped. • Don't come back Renzo; make the most of your learning experience and don't get stuck there again. Balconies, courtyards and light wells are traps for the unwary batties of this city. • YAY! I love a good hard release with all the suspense and drama and batty ire. I had to high five myself because Maggie is away again (she gets around a lot). • Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult). • https://tolgabathospital.org/donate/ • Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me. • If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me. • IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt. • The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie. • Here’s Jenny’s email. • [email protected]
