This old English song of St George sounds like something you'd hear chanted on the football terraces, but it's over 400 years old! • Why do you boast of Arthur and his knights, • Knowing well how many men have endurëd fights? • For besides King Arthur and Lancelot du Lake • Or Sir Tristram de Lionel that fought for ladies' sake, • Read in old histories, and there you shall see • How St George, St George the dragon made to flee. • St George he was for England, St Dennis was for France; • Sing, ‘Honi soit qui mal y pense.’ • The wars of ancient monarchs it were too long to tell, • And likewise of the Romans, how far they did excel— • Hannibal and Scipio in many a field did fight, • Orlando Furioso he was a worthy knight, • Remus and Romulus were they that Rome did build, • But St George, St George the dragon made to yield. • St George he was for England, St Dennis was for France; • Sing, ‘Honi soit qui mal y pense.’ • St David of Wales the Welshmen much advance, • St Jaques of Spain, that never yet broke lance, • St Patrick of Ireland, which was St George’s boy, • Seven years he kept his horse and then stole him away, • And the Scots unto death will St Andrew maintain, • But St George, St George the dragon he hath slain. • St George he was for England, St Dennis was for France; • Sing, ‘Honi soit qui mal y pense.’ • St George for England is a forgotten classic, first mentioned in the early 1600s. • There are 12 verses in all, but three seemed enough to keep this recording short and sweet. As well as tweaking the tune, I've also made some slight changes to the words. • For full details of the song, see my book, St George for England: songs and plays for St George's Day (Welkin Books, 2019) which is available from bookshops, or here via Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/St-George-En... • It would be great if this old song could get a new lease of life in the 21st century.
