Hey guys it's Barratt from the Gimpy Camper. I wanted to talk to you today about RV slide skis. What are they? Why are they needed? Maybe even how to not put them on properly, right after this. • So one common problem with RV slides is the floor rotting. Some people have differing opinions on what causes this, but the most common rationale is that most slides move back and forth on friction slide bars these days. The only thing sliding over these bars is the Darko basketweave material that most manufacturers use to cover the bottom of the slide. Over time, especially with moderate use as these slides go in and out it wears out the darko material. Well as it rains and water runs down the side of the slide it goes over the trim bar but it isn't a sharp enough angle most times to form a drip edge at that point, so the water continues to run down the side of the slide and even slightly under the bottom of the slide. Now as the darko material wears out and the wood is exposed this water will actually wick up into the bottom of the floor and cause rot. A lot of manufacturers today are actually putting on slide skis from the factory now. A slide ski is essentially something to 1. Either protect and/or cover previous damage to the darko material and 2. a proper drip edge. • Now our friend Steve over at Shelburne RV rebuilds rotted slides more often than you would think. Every time I go to the shop they are fixing a slide with a rotten floor. Now I personally believe his solution is the best. After they rebuild the slide they get metal roofing, before it has any of the ridges in it, so essentially it's just a flat piece of metal. They then bend each side of the metal so that from one trim bar, all the way under the slide to the other trim bar is all protected with a metal surface. This causes less friction and better protection. Now this really isn't an option as a preventative, as the slide has to be taken all the way out of the camper to put the metal on. • Related Videos: • RV Slide Rollers: • • Camera Gear: • DJI Pocket Osmo: https://amzn.to/3sxF2f8 • DJI Wireless Microphone: https://amzn.to/3DubZQS • Canon 70D: https://amzn.to/3uF2g5U • Parrot Teleprompter 2: https://amzn.to/3P3TJQZ • Ulanzi LED Rechargable Light: https://amzn.to/3ozfYmH • PYG Tech phone/dji Pocket holder: https://amzn.to/3GLQRni • DJI Pocket Controller Wheel: https://amzn.to/35W9Yhv • Music provided by Soundstripe • I am now a proud affiliate of the Insty Connect Cellular router system.
