For International Furmint Day - 1st February 2023 - our Wine Director, David Allen MW tastes an excellent Dry Furmint made, in the Tokaji Region of Hungary, by Istvan Szepsy Junior. • The Szepsy family are leading producers of Tokaji wine, based in the village of Mád, just northwest of the town of Tokaj, in northeast Hungary. The Szepsy family has been producing wine in the region since the 1500s. Ancestor Szepsy Lasko Mati, in 1631, was the person to first document the process of making aszú wines. Head of the estate, István Szepsy, is a leading figure in Hungarian winemaking. Son István Szepsy jnr. is head winemaker at Szent Tamás winery, also in Mád. This wine has been has brainchild. • The estate boasts some 52 hectares (128.5 acres) of vines split across 22 vineyards in six municipalities. Production is centred in Mád, roughly eight kilometers (five miles) from the Bodrog river, along whose northern banks much of Tokaji's vineyards can be found. • Soils are mainly volcanic and rich in zeolite, quartz and clay. The average age of the vines exceeds 40 years. In the cellar native yeasts are used, enzyme additions are avoided, and sulphur additions kept to a minimum. • Among their multiple vineyard holdings, Szepsy has identified over 300 clonal variants of Furmint – the principal Tokaj grape variety.
