On Saturday 13 June 2009, the Victorian Goldfields Railway celebrated the 125th anniversary since the opening of the Castlemaine to Maldon branch line. Steamrail also ran a tour from Melbourne to Bendigo, which connected with the VGR train at Castlemaine.
