Short documentary about Mzimkulu Ntakana - This video is part of documentary project 'BORN FREE - Mandela's Generation of Hope', by photojournalist and videographer Ilvy Njiokiktjien / VII Photo Agency. • “Our elders were with us, teaching us how to think like a man. You know, boys don’t think things through, they just do. So they were teaching us to think something through before doing it.” • Mzimkulu Ntakana (21) just came back from a month of seclusion in the mountains, where he was circumcised and went through the initiation period that turns Xhosa boys into men. He is hesitant to talk about what exactly happened at the camp, which is meant to stay secret. • “They were teaching us not to be violent, not to abuse power,” he summarizes. “When hitting a woman, that’s you abusing power. So, they were teaching us to respect women, respect our elders. They’re teaching us respect, love.” • Now people are celebrating his return, involving lots of meat and alcohol. “Don’t mind the fighting with sticks,” he says apologetically about the boys outside. “They are not fighting, they are just playing, celebrating.” • The way visitors to his homecoming celebration get drunk on the copious amounts of brandy, vodka and whisky remind Ntakana of the month December, when people come back to spend the festive season with their family. Jobs are few in the mainly rural Eastern Cape province, so most working age people leave to find work in cities like Cape Town. • “The government started a construction on the other side, building a paved road, a lot of people got a job,” Ntakana names an exception. “But now the road is done, they are back to being unemployed.” • He is studying economics in Mthatha and hopes he can one day become an accountant, though he knows a degree is no a guarantee for a job in South Africa’s current reality, and he might have to create his own business. He doesn’t expect his future to be here in Centane. “I should come only in December.” • Tradition prescribes Nkatana to wear his new suit for the coming three months, signifying he is now a new man. During this time, he has to show his elders respect by looking down when they speak to him, and may not look them in the eye. • While he got to decide when he felt physically and emotionally ready to tell his father he wanted to go “into the jungle”, skipping the initiation was no option. “They make sure everything is done right when it comes to the culture, they don’t want the culture to just vanish like that.” • Does he never feel it would be easier to live in the city, where such traditions are no longer so strong? “The thing is, it will follow you. That’s the problem. This generation, the first to be born after apartheid, is supposed to bring unity and change to the country. They are Mandela’s human legacy: the first generation in which every South African has the same opportunities and racial segregation, on paper, is a thing of the past. They were to be the face of a new, free, and successful South Africa. Nelson Mandela always had a big heart for the youth, and would often refer to his dreams for the youth in his speeches. In this feature the born frees question the outcome of the dream Mandela had for them. They also talk about modern day racism; What is it like to be black, or colored in this modern day world? The South African story has many connections to other race related stories around the world. • Many born frees live successful lives, and are making careers that they wouldn't have been able to do during the old racist regime. There is a big group that is thriving in the new South Africa. But at the same time, there is still a long way to go. Corruption, crime and poverty are keeping many of the born frees captive. Instead of enjoying freedom and prosperity, this ‘born free generation’ struggles - sometimes even more than their parents - with unemployment and inequality. Official segregation may be a thing of the past, but class segregation seems to have taken its place. And for many South Africans, childhood is a time shaped by extreme violence and the aftermath of HIV and AIDS. • Note: More text available upon
