Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Scythe, a megawad by Erik Alm released in 2003. Its 32 maps are grouped into three episodes, which are distinguished from each other by level of difficulty rather than by theme: Episode 1 is aimed at new or casual players, Episode 2 is for proficient players, and Episode 3 is for experts only. Scythe’s levels are notable for their compact layouts and low monster counts, in the author’s own words, he “focuses on small, fun maps to blast through without much thought about defense.” Though often overshadowed by its sequel, Scythe II, arguably one of the most influential PWADs of its era, Scythe is still one of the classics, and the gameplay in its final episode holds up especially well to modern scrutiny. Well, mostly. You’ll see. • Link to the wad: • https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/lev...
