(1 Nov 1995) Spanish/Nat • • French nuclear tests in the South Pacific are triggering anger throughout Latin America. • • In Chile, the environmental group Greenpeace again resorted to daredevil tactics to attract attention to their condemnation of the French nuclear explosions. • • The protests ended with the arrests of several Greenpeace activists. • • Led by Greenpeace, Chile's environmentalist movement is trying to shame France for her nuclear testing. • • Several Greenpeace activists staged a peaceful protest in front of the French Embassy in the capital- Santiago- against nuclear tests in the South Pacific. • • Two protesters displayed a large banner, calling for peace and demanding an end to nuclear tests. • • Despite strong international criticism, France has conducted three tests so far, the latest one on Friday. • • The explosions have triggered protests and demonstrations around the world. • • SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) • This is part of the demonstration we are doing all over the world in front of French embassies in an effort to put an end to this nuclear craziness. • SUPER CAPTION: Myriam Urzua, Director, Greenpeace Chile • • In Latin America, countries close to the Pacific rim are outraged by President Chirac's decision. • • They fear their Pacific coastlines make them vulnerable to any side effects that might result from the tests. • • The banner, reading No More Nuclear Tests, was displayed on the building right next door to the embassy, in full view of the French diplomats. • • Greenpeace's goal is to make France look like the outcast of the international community, especially of Pacific rim nations, like Chile. • • SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) • Greenpeace, civic organisations and the people of Chile condemn France's 60-kiloton third nuclear explosion last Friday in the Mururoa Atoll.
