On the early morning of 6 August, 1945, three B-29 Superfortresses of the 393nd Bombardment Squadron, 509th Composite Group lifted off the small Pacific Island of Tinian. One of these B-29’s was piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets Jr., and had modified bomb doors to carry just one bomb. Tibbets and his crew would be tense for the next six hours on their mission to the Japanese city of Hiroshima. • Blissfully unaware, the people of Hiroshima started their first day of the school week. As usual, the schoolyard was bustling with life as students gathered for the beginning of their classes. Despite the country struggling with the atrocities of war, none of these people felt directly threatened. Unlike Tokyo, Hiroshima had not yet suffered devastating bombing campaigns, and most people had not experienced the full horrors of the war. • However, in an instant, and a flash of light, the world changed forever.
