This exercise helps to correct a common muscle imbalance in the shoulder where the biceps can become dominate leading to biceps tendonitis and even biceps ruptures and tears. It teaches you how to recruit the posterior chain of the of the shoulder girdle for greater stability and balanced muscle recruitment. It also helps teach how to maintain dimension in the upper rib cage which is the base of support for the shoulder. Mastering this exercise is important to allow a biceps muscle/tendon injury to heal and to have shoulder pain not reoccur. You do not need a foam roller for this and it may be easier to do this flat on the floor.
