The original cathedral was built two miles from this current location in 1075, nine years after the Norman conquest of England by William the Conquerer at the location known as Old Sarum as part of a castle complex, and was completed in 1091. Lack of water, stormy weather and difficulties with castle guards caused the priests to begin looking for another location for the cathedral. In 1218 a new location was chosen and work began in 1220, paid for by wealthy Barons such as William Longespee whose tomb still resides inside the cathedral and can be visited by guests. Longespee was believed to have been murdered by the order of King John. The cathedral foundation is about 4 ft deep, under that is gravel and water. You will see in the video how they check the water level to make sure it’s at a safe level for the building. The Cathedral also houses an original Magna Carta and has it on display however photos wee not allowed of it.
