Biddulph Moor, a quaint village in Staffordshire Moorlands, the source of the River Trent. It’s nearest railway station, 4 miles away, nearest city, Stoke on Trent a further 10 miles the opposite direction. • Approximately 1,640 residents • 3 churches • 2 shops • 2 pubs • 1 school • And me, the only gay in the village. In the unlikely event that you come across another gay, a week later you’re forcing your adopted son Sparkle to watch Queer Eye and making your wife’s lunch for work tomorrow because she. is. the. one. • This is a bus stop. This is a sixth form. When I was 17, by accident I’d fallen head over heels for only other gay I knew of. She had a full time job, I went to college, she babysat at the weekend, I spent mine slinging pies; making time to secretly kiss was difficult. After seeing her for 3 hours that month, I was ready. • My dad, hero, always saved me a 45 minute walk down the Moor dropping me off at this bus stop so I could hop on the number 9 and not do my coursework at college. • “Dad, I need to tell you something” I said • He looked in the mirror, I knew what he was thinking • -“if she’s pregnant at least that means she’s not gay” • “I’ve got a girlfriend dad” • Silence proceeded the car journey, and for the next month or so, until we all said a few things we probably didn’t mean and found closure a few years later.
