Anemia (literally no blood ) is the situation in which there is not enough oxygen-carrying capacity in the bloodstream. This can be due to not enough erythrocytes, or not enough hemoglobin in the erythrocytes, or even because the hemoglobin is mutated. Iron-deficient anemia could be due to blood loss (heavy periods, for example), or low iron dietary intake or low iron absorption. Hypothyroidism causes anemia because thyroxine (in healthy amounts) stimulates red blood cell formation. Kidney damage can result in anemia because the kidneys normally release erythropoietin, an important hormone that stimulates red blood cell formation. Chemotherapy can cause anemia because the red blood cells may become more fragile. • Find diagrams, notes, and practice questions at http://www.sciencewithsusanna.com
