This list includes both chess openings for black against 1. e4, and chess openings for black against 1. d4. (IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER!) One thing you will notice is that I try to find chess openings that are rare! This gives me an advantage in preparation, comfortability, and knowledge as my chess opponent's often have no clue what is happening! Something like the Caro-Kann Defense or Sicilian Defense are strong! However, one potential disadvantage is that your opponent's have studied a TON for these black chess openings. The Nimzowitsch Defense Kennedy Variation? Not so much. The Czech Pirc Defense? Not so much. The Hippopotamus Defense? Well you get the point. These are all fun chess openings for beginners as well. I know many chess beginners have a hard time knowing what chess opening to play. My recommendation is to play what you like! Chess openings are all about finding your style of play and running with it! Below are some quick summaries of the chess openings for black I play all the time, and why they are so dangerous. • 1. Nimzowitsch Defense Kennedy Variation! • Learn to Play the Nimzowitsch Defense... • The Nimzowitsch Defense Kennedy Variation has been a ton of fun for me lately! The Nimzowitsch Defense itself with 1. ...Nc6 is very rare, and the Kennedy Variation brings out great results. There are potential transposition, including us going into a Scotch Game. But is our opponent a Scotch Gambit chess player? Probably not PLUS we have a sound and solid chess game from there. The Nimzowitsch Defense is rich in chess opening theory, chess opening strategy, chess opening moves, chess opening principles, and chess opening ideas. • 2. Czech Pirc Defense! • Play the Czech Pirc Defense? CLICK THIS! • The Czech Pirc Defense comes out of the Pirc Defense, a rare chess opening for black against 1. e4! However, both the Pirc Defense and Czech Pirc Defense could be reached through 1. d4 as well. I have recently made a chess course on the Czech Pirc Defense, as well as the chess opening tricks, chess opening traps, chess opening theory, chess opening principles, chess opening moves, chess opening ideas, and chess opening strategy! The Czech Pirc Defense (or Pirc Defense Czech Variation/Czech Defense) is a top tier chess chess opening for black that can help you improve at chess, win more games, and have fun while doing it. • 3. Scandinavian Defense Modern Variation! • How to Play Scandinavian Defense! • The Scandinavian Defense might not be seen as rare, but the Modern Variation certainly is! I have been playing the Scandinavian Defense since I was a kid - I enjoyed it back in the 2000s, and still enjoy playing the top tier chess opening for black today! • 4. Charlick Gambit! • FUN CHESS OPENING FOR BLACK AGAINST d... • The Charlick Gambit (which starts as an Englund Gambit) is a fun chess opening for black against 1. d4 which has a TON of chess opening tricks and traps to win games fast! Very fun chess gambit for black. Do I recommend this against Magnus Carlsen ‪@themagnuscarlsen‬ or Hikaru Nakamura ‪@GMHikaru‬? No. But, the chess opening is fun at the chess beginner level, intermediate chess level, and speed chess time controls. • 5. The Hippopotamus Defense! • Chess Openings: How to ACTUALLY Play ... • The Hippopotamus Defense is my favorite chess opening! I played the Hippo Defense as both white and black to reach the National Master title. The Hippo chess opening is a chess middlegame focused opening, and can help you improve at positional chess, attacking chess, and endgame chess.
