From disconnecting from technology to expressing creativity, the aquarium hobby offers unique benefits that extend beyond just keeping fish. • One of the main reasons I got back into the aquarium hobby is that it allows me to disconnect from technology. In today’s world, we’re constantly surrounded by screens—whether for work, socializing, or entertainment. While some aspects of the hobby involve research and tech, for the most part, you can simply sit back and enjoy your tank without a device in hand. Personally, I enjoy spending time maintaining my tanks on Sundays, trimming plants and doing water changes, as a refreshing break from screens. • Another reason I believe keeping aquariums can improve your life is through creative expression. While aquascaping gets most of the attention in this regard, even a basic planted tank allows for creativity with different plant colors, shapes, and sizes. You can also get creative with rocks, driftwood, and the vibrant fish, shrimp, or snails that complement your plants. I’ve recently started experimenting with aquascaping, but I’m especially drawn to creating aesthetic Walstad method tanks as part of my future goals. • Aquarium keeping is also highly customizable. Whether you’re into aquascaping, shrimp keeping, or even rare snail collections, you can tailor your approach to suit your preferences. You can choose between low-tech setups like mine, which avoid CO2 injection, or high-tech setups with expensive equipment. From nano tanks to monster fish tanks, the possibilities are endless, allowing you to shape the hobby into what best fits your lifestyle. • For those on a budget, aquarium keeping offers plenty of affordable options. I’m a big fan of shrimp jars, which are inexpensive and simple to set up. I also have a pearlweed jungle tank that was set up for under £100, which I use for shrimp, but others have used similar setups for bettas. You can still enjoy the beauty of aquariums without breaking the bank, and I’ve linked a few of my setup videos in the description for those interested. • One of the most rewarding aspects of the hobby is the sense of accomplishment you get from solving problems. I’ve had ongoing issues with my Orange Neocaridina shrimp tank, but after finally seeing females carrying eggs, it gave me an incredible sense of achievement. For newcomers, there are beginner-friendly setups, but as you progress in the hobby, overcoming challenges becomes a truly fulfilling experience. • Keeping aquariums also offers a connection to nature, bringing a piece of the natural world into your home. Whether you’re caring for fish, shrimp, snails, or aquatic plants, you’re essentially creating a living ecosystem. In today’s fast-paced, tech-heavy world, this connection to nature can be incredibly grounding and fulfilling. • Breeding is another exciting aspect of the aquarium hobby. I’ve mostly focused on breeding shrimp so far, but next year, I plan to breed Medaka and possibly experiment with breeding Corydoras and Harlequin Rasboras. Breeding your own fish or shrimp deepens your connection to the creatures in your tank and adds another layer of accomplishment. • Recently, several Fishtubers have been talking about how keeping aquariums has helped their mental health. With mental health issues on the rise, sitting and watching your aquarium can provide a much-needed escape and relaxation at the end of a stressful day. I’ve found this personally true, and I believe it’s one of the hobby’s most overlooked benefits. • Another often overlooked aspect is the sense of community within the aquarium hobby. Whether through local fishkeeping clubs or online communities, you can connect with other hobbyists, share tips, and learn from each other. Specialist stores like Horizon Aquatics also host workshops and meetups, offering even more opportunities to engage with fellow enthusiasts. • TIMESTAMPS • 00:00 - Intro • 00:10 - Reason 1 • 00:53 - Reason 2 • 01:58 - Reason 3 • 02:28 - Reason 4 • 03:11 - Reason 5 • 04:06 - Reason 6 • 05:40 - Reason 7 • 06:31 - Reason 8 • 06:56 - Reason 9 • 07:43 - Reason 10 • Some of the links in this video description may be affiliate links meaning I earn a small commission from any purchases made.
