While the words for “Amazing Grace” were written by John Newton in 1772, the melody is a tune called “New Britain” from the early 19th century. The two were joined in 1835 by American Composer William Walker. • The lyrics are based on John Newton's experience of receiving God's grace and mercy, despite the terrible things he had done captaining a slave ship in the Atlantic Slave trade.
