(19 Mar 1996) Mandarin/Nat • • A prominent Chinese dissident says she doesn't believe Beijing plans to invade Taiwan. • Chai Ling, a well-known activist who took part in the Tiananmen Square demonstrations, is in Taiwan to observe the Presidential election. • • Former student leader Chai Ling is in Taiwan at the invitation of the World League for Freedom and Democracy. • • She was smuggled out of China after the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989 and now lives in exile in the United States. • • Chai claims China's military exercises near Taiwan are intended to influence the Taiwanese presidential election. • • She says Beijing's sabre rattling underscores the internal conflicts among China's leadership and the shaky position of its President, Jiang Zemin. • • Chai also said she believed China would not invade Taiwan. • • SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) • The peaceful revolution that has been going on in Taiwan actually serves as a very strong fight back to Beijing's totalitarian rule. In Taiwan the government handed over power but it did not fall apart and instead the society became more peaceful, prosperous and stable.
