BEYOND TIME BY FINN SPRINGBORN

When the idea of ‘Beyond Time’ came up, I was sitting in Munich and it had already been a few weeks since my last surf trip. That's why I'm super motivated and put together a team with Philipp Sigmund from Different Minds. Excited, I check the forecast maps for Europe, but with summer slowly but surely arriving, there's unfortunately not much happening in the North Atlantic. Scotland is on the cards, and a small swell is also rolling towards Brittany. Nothing spectacular, but it would certainly be fun. I keep an eye on both forecasts for a few days, but the closer we get to the possible dates, the more sobering the forecast looks. A week or two goes by, and Philipp and our film team activated for the project are still waiting for the ‘go’. But waiting for waves is just as much a part of it as surfing itself, of course, and sooner or later everything comes together again. A short time later, a sight pops up on the maps that gives me a lot of hope that we will be able to get going very soon. A dark red bubble is moving across the screen, pushing southwards from Iceland and Norway before making a small detour between England and Norway towards Denmark. • I haven't been to my home country of Denmark for weeks, which is why this sight comes in handy. I'll wait another day or two, because at these latitudes you can usually only really make a statement about the forecast 2-3 days in advance. Unlike the last swells we had our eyes on, this storm really is due to hit the north-west coast of Denmark, as it turns out over the next few days. So I let the boys know and we start packing. 48 hours later, we have arrived in my adopted home. The modest little fishing village of Klitmöller, in the middle of Thy National Park on the west coast of Denmark. Klitmöller, or ‘Cold Hawaii’ as the surrounding area is also known, is, as the name suggests, known for two things: Surfing and the cold. The winter months in particular can really get to you and seem to last forever. The only advantage is that the best swells roll onto the North Sea coast from October to March, which is why many of us stay here and make the short days and bad weather bearable. There's no question of darkness in summer. On the contrary, it hardly gets dark at this time of year. The sun rises at 4 a.m. and sets at 11 p.m., with twilight in between, and a red glow can actually be seen all night, which makes the light and the atmosphere very special in the summer months. • I love being in Denmark at this time of year, when the tourists flock to the coast, there are long queues in front of the ice cream parlours, the sun is shining, the water is warm and everyone is in a good mood. The waves don't have the same quality and don't come at the same regular intervals as in winter. Sometimes the North Sea is very calm and puts us surfers to the test of patience, which can be very frustrating after weeks of ‘sitting on dry land’. But when a good summer swell does arrive, there's nothing better than surfing at home. If you like surfing without the summer crowd, set your alarm clock really early and paddle out at sunrise, and those of us who don't mind if it gets a bit crowded in the line-up can easily surf until midnight. • You might realise what I'm getting at: time is super important for us surfers and, above all, very relative. Waiting for waves can feel long and tough, can seem frustrating and endless, and then when it all comes together, it feels like a rush and goes by in a flash. At the same time, the seconds you're on the board when you catch a good wave feel like time stands still. That's what we're so addicted to and what keeps drawing us back to the ocean - the feeling we tried to capture in ‘Beyond Time’. • #gshock #nevergiveup #watchesformen #toughwatches • ➠ Find our website here: https://www.gshock.casio.com/ • ➠ Find our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/CASIOGSHOCKEurope • ➠ Find our Instagram Channel here: https://www.instagram.com/gshockeu/
