I recently rediscovered ‘Zen in the art of writing’, a collection of essays published in 1996 and written by Ray Bradbury over a period of 30 years. Although Bradbury speaks primarily to writers and about the art of writing, his ethos is equally relevant and valuable for artists using other forms of expression. • The short book is a brilliant demonstration of creating from a place of joy. He states that “if you are writing without zest, without gusto, without love, without fun, you are only half a writer. It means you are so busy keeping one eye on the commercial market, or one ear peeled for the avant-garde coterie, that you are not being yourself.” In Bradbury’s creative process, joy, love, fun and authentic expression are intertwined, interchangeable. • The GUSTO ZEST he speaks of is palpable in his essays. His words actually walk their talk; you can feel their energy, a vitality and vigor supported by years of self-revelation and authentic expression. In the preface, this gusto zest is captured in a glorious analogy: “Every morning I jump out of bed and step on a landmine. The landmine is me. After the explosion, I spend the rest of the day putting the pieces together.” In this, Bradbury demonstrates his life-long strategy of following his curiosity wherever it may lead, having the courage to pen this curiosity in a voice and style true to his own nature. • This is a powerful analogy for the creative process in which an artist is at once wholly absorbed in a world that is close to their heart and at the same time transcends their personal ego and the limitations of their immediate environment to channel a wisdom beyond their reach – whether that wisdom appears in the guise of a character, a colour combination, a melody, a phrase, a visual pattern, or a sequence of movements. • Whatever the artist channels appears IN this world, but is not OF it... • These 15 nuggets of nous from Ray Bradbury are encouragement for any artist attempting to stay close to their truth regardless of circumstance...and powerful reminders that the artist’s primary tools are always imagination, feeling, memory and sensuality. The quotes have been paired with activating artworks painted by Lanon Prigge inviting a bold journey towards curiosity and courage. • Living Life Artistically is an initiative of iNous.
