Mobileye, an Intel company based out of Israel and a manufacturer of advanced driver assistance technologies, including autonomous driving systems, is telling us that the first step to fully autonomous vehicles will be the successful deployment of an autonomous fleet of self-driving vehicles. • With a fleet of autonomous vehicles ready to serve, mobility would become a service, removing the need to own or maintain a vehicle, for the purpose of transportation. Just as ride-hailing has disrupted the taxi industry with its on-demand apps, your 'robotaxi' would arrive exactly when you need it to take you to work, pick up the kids from school, and whisk you all home. Then it drives away again, to pick up the next rider. • Tesla is also pursuing autonomous driving technologies as well, with a model that turns the vehicle you own, into a taxi that makes you money when you're not driving it. With most vehicles sitting idle for most of the day, this would be a fascinating model for vehicle ownership. • Caught in the crossfire are the taxi companies, ride-hailing, ride-sharing, and other businesses that operate with human drivers. Will Uber and Lyft's plans to automate come soon enough? What will become of the transportation industry?
