🗣️ The southern part of the Dutch province of Limburg was heavily affected by intense rainfall and its consequences. In the Limburg Hills and the Eastern Mining Region, heavy rain on July 13 and 14 caused streams and rivers to overflow. In some areas of South Limburg, more than 150 millimeters of rain fell on these two days. Several bridges over the Geul River were damaged, with one collapsing. Hundreds of residents and hotel guests were evacuated, with military assistance. In total, 2,300 households in Valkenburg were affected, and 700 homes became temporarily uninhabitable. Additionally, 270 restaurants and 180 shops were impacted by the high water. On July 15, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visited the center of Valkenburg. The damage in Valkenburg was estimated at 400 million euros shortly after the flooding. • On July 15, the flow rate of the Meuse River at Eijsden (3,260 m³/s) exceeded the (winter) record set in 1993 (3,120 m³/s). The measurement record dates back to 1911 (during the 1643 floods, the flow rate was likely higher, estimated at 3,600 m³/s). Sections of highways A2, A76, and A79 were closed, and parts of Eijsden, Maastricht, Stein, and Roermond were evacuated consecutively. In the Boschpoort district of Maastricht, a dam threatened to give way. In Geulle, a dike along the Julianakanaal seemed to be breached on July 16. People were urged to evacuate neighboring villages as soon as possible. Rijkswaterstaat later reported that it was seeping water from the Meuse, which could be stopped with sandbags. In Venlo and the neighboring municipalities of Baarlo and Kessel, over 10,000 people were evacuated on July 16. In Venlo, a hospital was evacuated as a precaution. Evacuations also took place in the municipalities of Stein, Sittard-Geleen, Echt-Susteren, Roermond, and Roerdalen (Including the village Vlodrop). • After the water level in the Meuse dropped, the emergency situation in North Limburg was lifted on July 20. According to the Limburg water board, the province narrowly escaped disaster, as no dikes broke. Thanks to all the measures taken since the high water events in 1993 and 1995, the flooding along the Meuse in 2021 was much less severe than in those earlier events. By mid-August 2021, the total damage in Limburg was estimated at 1.8 billion euros, excluding loss of income. Approximately two-thirds of that amount was not covered by insurance.
