Wildrose Peak | Panamint Mountains | Death Valley National Park, California | Visit https://lasvegasareatrails.com/wildro... | Wildrose Peak is the Northern most peak in the Panamint Mountain Range. The 4.2-mile trail to the 9,064ft summit is excellent with a beautiful rustic area for pitching a tent and sleeping under the stars just below the final approach to the summit. • Beginning at the 6,800ft trailhead located at the Wildrose Charcoal Kilns parking area camping the trail ascends 2,264ft to the summit of Wildrose Peak. At first you will find yourself in what’s referred to as a “pigmy forest” populated with pinyon pine and juniper. As you rise mid-ridge along a canyon trail the pines and junipers become much taller, no longer a pigmy forest. Along the way there are views of Wildrose Peak and, looking back down the canyon, the valley through which you traveled on Emigrant Pass Road to get to the Wildrose Charcoal Kilns. • • Your first great spectacular views begin upon topping the upper ridge of the Panamint Mountain Range, with sweeping views down into Death Valley. The trail levels off a bit as it traverses the spine of the Panamint Mountain Range. Here, looking down into Death Valley you can see a good part of the approach ridge above Hanaupah Canyon one may ascend from the salt pan floor of Death Valley (below sea level), through numerous climate zones up to Mahogany Flat Campground and beyond all the way to the 11,049ft summit of Telescope Peak. • There is a gradual ascent toward a saddle below the summit. This is the area where you will find many great places to spend the night. Bring your telescope to view the brilliant night sky! • The sweeping views of Death Valley continue as you cross the saddle and begin your final ascent to the summit. Rodgers Peak comes into view, then most of the Rogers Peak access road and finally even the road between the Wildrose Charcoal Kilns and Mahogany Flat Campground. The final ascent is the usual steep switchbacks for about 5-800ft. • The summit of Wildrose Peak itself is a “saddle summit” with 2 summits and a saddle between. Beyond the true summit there is a third high area we explore, well worth it due to the unique views and lots of beautiful white marble scattered about and in veins along the ridge. From the summit there are sweeping views of Death Valley stretching to the North and to the South…possibly a span of 100 miles or more. You can see all the way East to the Mt. Charleston Wilderness in the Spring Mountains near Las Vegas. To the West you can see all the way to the Sierra Nevada mountain range. • Wildrose Peak may not be as high as Telescope Peak, but it is more assessable to hikers and has a unique intimate spirit and beauty of its own. Well worth the 8.4-mile round trip!
